In American library world, as the northern hemisphere turns its back on the Sun and leans into Midwinter, it's abruptly Santa prime-time. A flip through the Dewey 200s or 394s is enough to betray the disproportionate weight of "traditional American" colonialist influence - a Northwest-European, largely Protestant Christianity with a well-supported infrastructure of patriotic mercantilism - on the evolution of library philosophy in the previous century.
We have choices and responsibilities, and, frankly - to fairly use (and totally subvert) an old hotdog slogan - we answer to a higher power. Fifth Amendment principles eclipse whatever might pass for "tradition" when it comes to serving and supporting who our communities are right now - metropolitan, mobile, migratory, multicultural, moving and mixing and always rematerializing. An informed citizenry is one with free access to cultural learning and inclusive support for all lifeways here and now. Here are some DUP-vetted titles that we hope will help balance the bias of the calendar we all set our clocks by.
